I am a s/e judge in the State of Michigan. There are certain things that
have forced me to disqualify students for. If a group calls for a trio and
one person of the group gets sick, find a replacement right away or it will
be disqualified. Not having a judges score will prevent you from playing,
if a piece calls for accompanist it has to have it. If your piece goes
over the allotted time limit the judge or room chairman can make you stop
when your time is up (without penality, however). All of the rules are in
the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Ass. handbook that directors get. I
try to always listen to all of a solo, especially when a student has
struggled with the 1st movement of the Mozart or simlar undertaking. I
listen to about 60 clarinets at each festival and my writing hand aches
from writing. 2nd division ratings normally become quite wide. The time
limit rules are there so kids don't wait for an hour past their time to play.

Best Regards!
