I didn't say that you should march oboes, bassoons, and bass clarinets.
These instruments are the minority of the woodwinds section anyway.
Most woodwinds, at our school, are clarinets and alto saxes. Those who
do play oboe, bassoons, and the likes usually switch to something else
anyway (oboe to flute, bassoon to alto sax, bass clarinet to clarinet).

A lot of our music depends on woodwinds also. I play tuba in marching
band, and when we have a brass sectional, there are a lot of places
where we sustain chords, and woodwinds have the lead line. This doesn't
happen often, but there are places where it does.

By the way, I hate marching band also. As does just about everyone at
our school, other than the solo trumpet and the percussion section. But
that's not really the issue. Fortuneately (or unfortuneately) our
football team is usually up there with the best in the state, and we
have quite a long season. The band has got to be there for all of it,
like it or not!

If the director went ahead and said "Okay, you don't like to march
that's okay. You can watch," how many people would be left on the
field?
