When I was in school, the main choice of instruments to march depended
on the director's perception of the risk of damage and subsequent
possible repair cost. French horn players marched with mellophones.
(The school owned all the French horns & mellophones, none of the
students did). Other brass all marched (trombones, tubas,
trumpets/cornets, etc. The school did generally own all but the
trumpets/cornets). Oboes, english horns, bassoons, clarinets larger
than soprano, and saxes larger than tenor (again all these were school
owned)did not march, all played something else in marching band.

As far as brass outplaying woodwinds, that is true. BUT sound is
additive. So even if the sound of the brass dominates, the woodwinds
will contribute a significant amount to the total volume and will
contribute some to the overall timbre of the sound.

For the person who was unsure of spelling:

timbre (pronounced like timber) not tamber
