There are several ways to go about micing a clarinet and it depends on what
sort of a budget you are on. The easiest way (and cheapest) is to get a
barcus-berry pickup that either connects to your reed or screws into an
accubore barrel. This setup is about $250 if I remeber correctly. A few
years ago at the Tempe ICA conference, this was the method of choice for
Bill Smith and Gerard Errante among others. Since then, a new mic system
that uses two condensor microphones that mount on the outside of the
instrument. I don't remember who makes it, but I have heard good things
about it and I know it is sold through Woodwind/Brasswind. If you decide
to go for just a microphone on a stand, you need to decide whether you want
one that is a dynamic (ie. Shure SM 57) or condensor (ie. Shure SM 81 or
most high-end mics.) Most mics will also need a preamp before you plug
into an amplifier to boost the signal from the weak mic level to a
reasonable line level.

If you write to me off of the list with more information, I would be happy
to help in any way I can.
