I would just like to say that there are MANY kids out there taking private
lessons for bass clarinet, me included. I know for a fact that many of my
friends play the bass clarinet at school because they like having less
competition. I am the same way. I do however agree that a bass clarinet
player must be equally skilled on their clarinet. It helps majorly to start
on the clarinet and then proceed to the bass. You should also keep your
skills up on the clarinet because if your marching band director decides all
of the sudden that he isn't going to march any bass clarinets, you have to be
able to play your clarinet equally as well. I know from experience.
