Prepare to be flamed about your reference to "dark" sound -- it is a
hot-button issue on the list. But I think I know what you mean.

Try a more open mouthpiece, such as a Vandoren B-45. The 5RV is a little
wimpy for me, much like a Selmer HS*. I also play a Selmer C85 (115
opening). It blows more easily, but is a little brighter that a B-45.
Note: You will probably have to back off on reed strength a little when
you switch to a more open mouthpiece.

If you have to mic a saxophone, the rest of the band is too loud.
