After my posting to Jane about double tonguing on the bass clarinet I was surprised to find that
she does not play or even own a clarinet.

This brings up an interesting area of debate that was touched upon earlier in a discussion as to
whether one should obtain a degree in bass clarinet. I was surprised to find out that IU DOES
allow such a major.

If you intend to make a career as SOLO bass clarinetist, (About four or five people come to
mind),
then you might have an argument for not learning to play clarinet. But, in reality if you want a
music career that involves the bass clarinet you MUST be able to play the clarinet. Further, if
you want to compete for orchestral positions you must be able to play clarinet on a level that
would allow you to play anywhere in the section, including Principal.

Most of the clarinetists that I know who play bass clarinet consider themselves clarinetists
FIRST , but have developed their skills on bass clarinet to match their expertise and facility
on clarinet. Another practical consideration is this. If you are interested in a music career a
good part of your income will most likely be from private teaching. Not too many kids out there
taking bass clarinet lessons.
