Again (lol) I meant exactly what I said; that Stoltzmann's use of vibrato was
"very satisfactory" in the playing of the Bernstein.

Let me amplify. My choice of words was deliberate.....meaning that the way
Stolzmann used vibrato in this particular piece was appropriate to the
"style" of the piece - especially the fast jazzy parts. Remember this piece
was written circa 1942 where the primary popular music was Swing - a la
Benny Goodman. I believe that this was the "sound" that Bernstein had in his
ear when he wrote this music.

In the first section, which is so strongly suggestive of the style of
Hindemith, Mr. Stoltzmann used a vibrato which was very different. Not
"jazzy" but much more subdued (less variability of pitch and probably slower,
although details are now becoming fuzzy). Again.....appropriate,
satisfactory.....in my opinion.

Throughout the evening, Mr. Stolzmann used vibrato in many ways (styles,
levels, amplitudes, whatever). The manner in which he used vibrato in the
fast, jazzy portions of the Bernstein would not (IMHO) be appropriate when
performing, say, the Mozart Clarinet Quintet. Be careful, though, in
interpreting what I just said - I happen to be one of those clarinetists who
use vibrato when I feel it is appropriate to the style and content of the
music.

O.K................I believe that explains what I meant by "very
