Matt, my first recommendation is to get a teacher. I don't believe you
would be asking these questions if you were taking good private lessons. To
get the results you wish, IMHO, some lessons are imperitive at this point.
There is so much more than just the mouthpiece in the production of good
tone. There is nothing "wrong" with your present mpc/lig. If you are
determined to tough it out alone, start by trying different reeds/strengths
and also vary the height of placement on the mouthpiece. Also you can vary
the placement of the ligature. PRACTICE ,PRACTICE, PRACTICE, play long
tones, scales, etudes, etc. experiment and see what these changes do. Change
only one thing at a time. I have found
that making small changes in your set-up can improve your sound by making
you reanalyze your embrousure, etc. Well, I guess that's my $0.02+worth.
But really, a good teacher would help you the most.
