Ariadne, this is a difficult decision for you to make (or anyone else
for that matter). But to base your choice on financial stability is a
poor choice. For starters, financial stability is an ILLUSION. No
matter what you do, you can find yourself unemployed at anytime. They
key to success in any field is to do what you want to do and focus on
achieving your goals. For some fields, you do need to take into account
that work may be sporadic and include that in your planning. After all
a person does have to eat now and then.

I am an engineer myself and have been one for 25 years. I have had 6
positions in that time, not always because I wanted a change. And I have
had to move all over the country to stay employed. In my last position,
they closed down the entire engineering department with NO warning.
Talk about a shock. At the company before that, the company was going
through some financial difficulties and they laid off 80% of the entire
staff, including engineers that had been with the company for 20 years.

So no matter what path you choose, even the "safest" may turn out to be
unstable. So my opinion is that you should choose what you love and
plan how to achieve it.

Good luck,
