Regarding the use of ear plugs:

I carry a pair of plugs made by North Specialty Products, in Brea, CA.
They're called Sonic II Sound Filters, with a 6 db noise reduction
rating, and are designed for the musician. Guitar stores stock them. I
use, generally, only one in the left ear (when the trumpets are on my
left, of course!). Even with both plugs in, I can hear the other
woodwinds around me. They tend to absorb only impulse sounds
(laser-tone trumpets, and deaf percussionists). I think they cost about
$13/pair, and come in a nice plastic box. When flying in light planes,
they come in handy, too, as the motor is about 3 feet from your face.
