It really depends on what state you are in. Here in NYS, the students all
get lessons in school by their music teacher (in most cases an instrumental
teacher, not the general music teacher, but that varies from district to
district too, depending on size). Even thought a student receives a lesson
each week or so in almost every case it will be a group lesson (hopefully
less than 4 students and all on the same instrument, again it varies from
district to district). They have pull out lessons during the regular school
day. The lesson time rotates so that the students does not miss the same
thing every week. (I am sure that in some places the student is pulled out
at the same time each week, but like I said before it does vary from place to
place.)

The students are free to take private lessons, but they are arranged by the
student and are done on their own time and at their own expense. These would
be in addition to their lessons in school.
