Subj: Devienne Sonata #1
Date: Mon, 11 Aug 1997 12:09:39 -0400

The Devienne Premiere Sonata for Clarinet (Edition Musicales
Transatlantiques) that I have is for clarinet in Bb, with the 1st Mvt.
being in D (concert C). the piano score has the clarinet part in C. Looking
at the Clarinet part in C makes a lot more sense then Bb clarinet. I am
wondering if the sonata was originally written for clarinet in C. I
arranged the sonata for clarinet in C, and piano in Bb (instead of piano in
C). It makes more sense to me for the clarinet part to at least read in C,
if not to play on C Clarinet. There are runs in the piece that now start on
low E instead of low F#. Being that Devienne was a flutist, I wonder if he
wrote it for C Clarinet like the Piano Score has it? Opinions?? Facts??
PS. the Devienne Sonata #2 is one of the Rep. for the ICA Young Artist Comp.
