<< I am having a severe case of sinusitis from my allergies. Symptoms:
Clogging of the sinuses resulting in throat drainage and some loss of
hearing. As you can imagine, this has had some effect on my playing. The
doctor's medicine has helped a little. Does anyone have any other advice
on how to cure this annoyance?

Sorry to hear of your travails. Sinusitis is not fun, regardless of whether
you have to play clarinet or not. You don't mention the meds your doc has
you on, but something that has helped me is Humabid (1200mg/two times daily).
It's actually guafenisen, and it liquifies the mucus, allowing it to clear
from your sinuses easier ( I know this is gross, but it's easier to cough
loose and 'get rid of' in your favorite method). It is really better than a
decongestant, which will dry all the mucus membranes. This drying (which
sounds like it should be the answer..) makes the mucus membranes more
susceptible to irritation and infection, prolonging the misery.

Also try some saline nasal spray (Ayr is one brand, there are many) and use
it often.

If you are taking antibiotics, be sure to drink a lot of water and finish the
whole bottle. For a severe infection (these are NOT fun) it may take some
stronger antibiotics and a longer time taking them. If it's necessary, CT
scans are excellent at finding a chronic infection.

Good luck,
T. Nardin
