Subj: How young...?

Here I go again, butting into the thread for absolutely NO GOOD REASON,
but, I MUST contribute... just kidding. Seriously, I have a friend
(now 14) who started playing the clarinet when he was 6. He has told me
before that starting early did not really help him. He stopped for
several years in elementry school because he was frustrated with it, but
picked up again in 5th grade because of urging from his parents. Now,
that we are in high school, he is the number one player in our superb
(not to brag) band and is in several all-state bands etc., etc. He
feels that the time he played during elemtentry school took away from
his experience because he thinks he was just too young. On the other
hand, I didn't start playing until 7th grade (it wasn't offered at my
previous school) and I have had to play catch-up with the rest of the
band for the past two years, which meant playing at the same levels as
people with 3 more years of experience than me in the first six months I
played... As I said before, this probably won't help.

Sorry,
Elaine
