Do you mean to say that they pay more for a generic piano lesson then
clarinet???? It's the other way around here, piano teachers are a dime a
dozen. BTW. I studied piano with Alex Fiorillo (one of Vladimir Horowitz's
only 5 students) so I've been there done that.

Subject: Re: Teaching

I live in Texas and the going rate around here is 9.75 to 10.00 per half hour
session and you certainly do not buy music for them. If you would like to
copy music that is your choice, however that is copy right infringement...(I
think we all have done that though) The price changes according to where you
live. In the Dallas area where I am the cost is much high than say the
Austin area where I heard that the going rate is 7.75. If I know that the
people are a little short I have been known to put them on "scholarship" and
reduce my price to 5.00 per lesson. I think it pretty much depends on the
economy of your communitty and how much yoyu feel comfortable with based on
your experience in the field. I have been playing for over 20 years and have
been teaching a full studio between 60 to 80 students for 8 years now. My
students are successful in the different things that they take part in so I
feel very comfortable with my price range and would probably feel comfortable
up to about 11.00. I would tend to keep it here though. Parents tend to
want to pay 15.00 for a piano lesson (or more) and then shirk at the thought
of paying that much for a clarinet lesson. Oh well!

Good luck!
