THE CLARINET had an article very recently in the masterclass series. I had
just finished performing it on my Master's recital so it sticks in my mind.
Check 1996, last 2 issues and the first couple of 1997. I think that yo
uwill hit on it somewhere in there. I played my recital in Feb. of 1996 and
the article came out after I was through. However it is a very good article
with many great things to say.

As far as your other question....it sounds as if you have the same type of
peices here. All of them are 20th century and make use of effects to create
a mood or an image (impressionary.) If you were picking contest pieces you
might want to look at something in the way of classical or early romantic to
keep everyone honest. Just a suggestion though.

I have to say that if you are picking these pieces for other players to
perform, the Abyss is extremely difficult to pull off the correct way. I'm
not just saying that. I have been told the sathing from John Scott at the
University of North Texas and Kenny Grant at Eastman. My performance was a
good one by their standards but I heard some pretty bad ones that same year.
The effect just wasn't there. If you are going to use it to compete in this
competition then by all means go for it! Your teacher knows what they're
doing and it is a very satisfying piece to play.

Good luck!!
