Still, I don't think this is very common in most parts of the country. When
I was in high school (30+ years ago) a few people had R-13s, I suppose I
could have had one, too but I was more focused on buying some saxophones.

I have met several good high school players with R-13s here in Las Vegas.
However, my son could be the only 13 year old with one, but his is the same
age as he is.
