I think that we are losing sight of the original question.
Rob Teitelbaum wrote that he has a young 7 year old brother who is very
musical, has a very good ear and is itching to play the clarinet.
Should he be encouraged so young?
As I wrote, one can, citing some instances of prominant players who
started that way.
The latest message from David Bloomberg indicated that " youthful"
instruments are avaiblable now for that exact purpose.
I have a small student clarinet made by O'Brien (of mouthpiec fame) that
has few keys and a mouthpiece. Obviously it was designed for young
players.
I also had an Ocarina type clarinet, very small, with a regular
mouthpice, made in JAPAN for the purpose of teaching youg children how
to play a clarinet mouthiece.
The idea is to get the young student playing the single reed and
possibly graduate to a larger instrument later.
No is saying "START THEM YOUNG".
The answer related to Rob Teitelbaums's younger 7 year old brother.
