But don't you think that if they have a bad foundation it might actually
hurt them later? Would it be better to have two years of bad teaching
or no experience at all going into middle school?

I could very well be mistaken, but it seems to make sense that you would
want to have good habits or no habits at all. Maybe it helps if they
know basics, but it seems to me that for the sake of their musicianship
later in life, it may be wise to wait.

I would be interested to know if anyone has some stats on those who quit
playing in middle or high school, and exactly when they started.
