I think that this is an interesting area for discussion. I don't have any
vested interest in it (other than my own children). In general, it appears
that the middle school music programs in Las Vegas are very successful. The
other elective option besides music (which can be band, orchestra, or
choir) is not especially attractive. The school based sports program is
very limited. So if there was ever a situation to entice kids into the
music program this is it. And of course the music classes are every day,
not once a week like when I started in fourth grade.

However, since the program didn't start until 6th grade, I started my son
on lessons about 15 months before. This strategy has paid off, as he is one
of the best in his grade, was in the honor band, etc. Of course, this will
be much less significant when he starts high school in another year. But
the success he has experienced should carry him through.
