Subj: Copland Concerto -- follow-up

I am playing in a quartet with my former middle-school band director,
and two other players. After practice last night I was discussing the
Copland with him, and the fact that I would be taking it to Solo and
Ensamble next year. He informed me that due to an FBA (Florida
Bandmasters Assoc.) rule, I can only play for six minutes at the
festival.

My question is: where can I cut this piece so that it goes from
seventeen minutes to six? It is on the FBA list as recommended
literature, yet I feel that the requirement to cut it is ridiculous.
There just doesn't seem to be a really good place to cut. I hesitate to
cut tuttis (not that this would be sufficient to scale it back to 6 min.
anyway) because you need some sort of breather between sections. Then
again, if you cut the solo part it disrupts continuity.

I would really appreciate any suggestions on this matter, as I really
love this piece and as much as I hate to cut to it looks like I have
to. At least if I do have to cut it, I wish it to be in as tasteful a
manner as possible.
