When you equate an Eb with Till Eulenspiegel- you are right- its a
different instrument.
But for someone very young, just starting out, being able to cover the
holes properly and just learn how to blow- an Eb is not that outlandish.
There was a clarinet magazine some years ago that had the history of
Bellison. There was a picture of him as a very young boy with a small
clarinet. Did'nt affect him later (NY Phil)
I know of another Dutch clarinet player, Gys Karten, who started out at
the age of 5 on an Eb. Later was first clarinet in the Rotterdam Phil.
I did mention " or a C clarinet" but then C clarinets are harder to come
by. And by the way, piano playing does'nt hurt even grown ups.
