Stolzman may not be the most talented clarinetist out there (technically and
sometimes tonally) but he is a musician. Since the eary part of this century
many clarinetists have been just that - clarinet players. We need to group
together as a whole and enter in a new era. The general public likes music,
musicianship, and EXPRESSIVE charismatic soloists, i.e. vibrato and the
like.
Clarinet players have a strange tradition - to my knowledge unique to all
instrumentalists and singers - of "holding back" musically. Some lame
excuses are "the clarinet blends better with other instruments when vibrato
isn't used" or "physics dictate the modes blah, blah, blah" or my favorite,
"my teacher told me not to".
In conclusion, we all know Stolzman is not the greatest player - jazz or
classical - but who cares! He dares to be different from the clarinet norm
and thats ok with me.
