Even this may cause a subtle brightening of the sound. May I suggest
just obtaining a nanogram or less from the OUTSIDE of the clarinet and
performing PCR / RFLP to replicate the DNA? If there is no DNA present,
we can safely assume that the clarinet is plastic or has been played
by a saxophonist in the recent past.

IF DNA is present and has been amplified, we can sequence the genes,
and, possibly, clone the clarinet, bringing to a halt all the
cries of "but they used to be better".

Seriously, I have split a gut laughing at this thread. Thanks for the
diversion that only a group of musicians/clarinettists could provide.
