Thanks for your comments. Do you know if there is any way I can get
access to that dissertation?

I have been swinging the with humor section because the marking kind of
suggests a laid back, dare I say "jazzy" feel. Also, the walking bass
line in the piano gave me a indication there may be a jazz implication
or two.

I would like to hear that Goodman recording though, because the primary
source is probably Copland's intent, or at least close enough -- as
Copland was himself conducting.
