I would like to add also that as far as reeds go, the Vandoren 3 1/2 is
much too stiff for beginners (especially children) or the occasional
player. I have just begun teaching my daughter clarinet and the setup
that is working for her is a Vandoren B45 mouthpiece with a Mitchell
Lurie #2 1/2 reed. We tried a Mitchell Lurie #3 but it was too stiff
for her at this stage.

An instructor that makes these kind of mandates certainly is no
clarinettist. It is admirable that he/she wants them to use quality
equipment but that is the wrong approach.
