Subj: What Key -- Stranger on the Shore Revisited
Date: Fri, 1 Aug 1997 02:39:01 -0400

An earlier note stated with authority that Stranger on the Shore (the Ack=
er
Bilk piece featured in the movie Mr. Holland's Opus) is in Bb. I assume
that means one playing a Bb clarinet would play it in C, n'est-ce pas?

I have a wonderful songbook titled "One Hit Wonders of the Sixties" and =
it
includes Stranger On the Shore, with a piano score and vocal part with th=
e
words as previously reproduced on this list.

My question relates to the fact that the music in this book has it writte=
n
with one flat, which I take to be F. However, maybe it's a minor key,
perhaps D minor?? How does that translate to playing it in Bb? As you c=
an
tell, my college years were not spent productively on music theory. =

Unfortunately, they were wasted in the econ department and law school. =
Oh
well . . . =

Any help on straightening this out for me would be greatly appreciated.
