I know that moisture hurts any type of wood clarinet, so dunking it a
tub full of water may not be that good an idea. If you've seen both
kinds of clarinets I would say that you could pretty much tell the
difference by touch and sight. As for what kind of wood,

depending on how advanced/old you daughter is it probably wouldn't be a
matter of life or death if you did not get the exact top of the line
wood. I would not settle for plastic, but the kind of wood isn't as big
a deal.

Just make sure that you play it and it plays well, and your daughter is
comfortable with the instrument. Also, you may want to take it to the
local music store, and a repairman could assess what repairs are
neccessary at this time.

If you get bad vibes, than don't feel pressure to buy, but still check
it out -- it might be a good deal.
