"On Playing the Flute" by Quantz first appeared in 1752. It's *not* just
for flute players, and it's chock full of practical advice on how to avoid
performance anxiety. Of particular value is the chapter entitled "What a
Flautist Must Observe if he Plays in Public Concerts," much of which
applies to all musicians. Elsewhere, Quantz addresses "The Qualities
Required of Those Who Would Dedicate Themselves to Music."

Some other chapters: "Of Taking Breath" "What a Beginner Must Observe in
His Independent Practice" "Of Good Execution in General in Singing and
Playing" "How a Musician and a Musical Composition Are to Be Judged."

Quantz also reveals insights on how to play an allegro, how to play an
adagio, how to play cadenzas. Quantz was a giant: a virtuoso player, a
master teacher, and a decent composer. I highly recommend his book to all
musicians.
