It is a process that takes time.
I would suggess you read the book "JazzCountry" by Nat Hentoff.
It's about a teenage boy that has to make the decision of wheather he
will become a professional jazz musician or go to college.
It's really a good book dealing just the problems you mentioned. The book
is easy reading and should only take a couple of hours to get through.
