Subj: clarinetist taking from a flutist

Someone else mentioned that a non-clarinet teacher won't make excuses for
the instrument. However, what if the players make excuses based on the
teacher?

My school's band director is a clarinetist, and I think it's absolutely
wonderful that he will help with all kinds of clarinet things. The flutes
especially, and probably other sections, feel very shafted, however, when
he helps out the clarinets. In fact, several of my friends who play flute
feel they'd play a whole lot better if he could help them out more, and
complain bitterly that the only reason the clarinets of the band are
generally more competant than the flutes is that we get more help.
(Personally, I think they'd play a whole lot better if they practiced
more, but that's another story...) As long as you don't fall into the
trap of blaming the teacher -- and it seems that you're doing all kinds of
things to compensate for his lesser knowledge of the clarinet -- I think
having a flautist for a teacher probably isn't such a bad thing at all.
