RE: Bass clarinet as a major instrument. This major school...Indiana
University...does, in fact allow students to do their primary work, and
be admitted on, bass clarinet. There is certainly enough quality
literature to justify an undergraduate degree in either education or
performance, and with our 5 orchestras and 4 bands we have need of many
bass clarinetists of high quality. These students are expected to study
bass clarinet for three years, soprano for one, and achieve a respectible
performance level on both.

This "open door" policy for bass clarinetists does not bring us an
avalanche of bass only players, but there are several in the program at
any given time (out of a total clarinet major population of around 60).
