It is also possible to be active in music with a completely non-musical
career. I was a decent but not terrific clarinetist in college but I knew I
didn't have the stuff to make it as a performer or music teacher. It hasn't
stopped me! I'm active duty in the Air Force and I play in comunity bands,
sometimes as many as three different ones. These all volunteer organizations
are just the ticket! Rehearsing classic band literature and Sousa marches in
the evening after work is a major form of relaxation for me. And then we
play concerts in the shopping mall/nursing home circuit which satisfies the
performance bug. For fun I will occasionally acquire the piano reduction of
a concerto or a book orchestral exerpts to play on at home. I also pursue my
passion for clarinet music by going to performances of the symphony and
acquiring clarinet concerto CDs.

If you think a career in music may not be remunerative then take a hard look
at your prospects. But in anything you do music can be a big part of your
life.

Matt (and we have a concert at the Singing River Mall tonight in Gautier, MS
- all are invited. Highlight: West Side Story medley)
