Deborah,

I took piano lessons a few years ago and had a similar problem
with a teacher. She constantly criticized my playing, even though I had
just begun to play and had no experience with bass clef. After about 3
months I quit. I now wish I had found another teacher and continued. My
point in writing is to say that a friend of my sisters took lessons from
the same woman and had similar problems. One afternoon the student's
mother finally told the teacher that her daughter cried before each
lesson and pleaded with her mom to cancel. During and after each lesson
the student also cried. When the teacher was informed of how students
reacted to her 'teaching method" she ran sobbing from the house. As far
as I know she has yet to return to giving lessons. Was this instructor
aware of the effect her critical remarks were having on your student?
Perhaps this would have made a difference.
