I am a Doctoral Student at UNT and I will give you the same advice I have
heard Dr. Scott (clarinet Prof.) give many people asking the same questions
you are.

You go to college to learn to think. If music does it for you then great.
If you are not sure what you want to do then start with education. This
degree is long but if you change your mind then you will not have lost any
time as far as course work. If you start performance and find that you do
want to teach then you will be behind in several classes pushing your
graduation back at least a semester. If you know you want to teach then you
cannot do so in any public school without a teaching degree. With a
Performance degree you must go on to the Masters and start the Doctoral one
to be considered for a University job. I took performance as my major and I
am able to say this from my own experience.

I can also tell you that North Texas is a big school with a very high talent
ratio. It is exactly this that will make your music ed degree much more
valuable. People, especailly out of state, look upon that degree as if you
can do anything if you graduated from there. By the time you graduate with
an ed degree from UNT you will be certified to teach in something like 23
different states. That's quite a lot of job hunting space. As far as the
school being large...it is but the clarinet faculty is wonderful and they
really take care of their students. I have the priviledge to be one of the
clarinet teaching fellows this next year and I cannot wait to work with my
teachiers on a professional level! You should come down and visit sometime
soon. Don't wait because scholarship info goes out in Jan. If you have an
idea where you want to go then it can save you time. Try to come up on a
Tuesday or Thursday. This is when the Wind Symphony meets. This is the
highest ensemble in the school, directed by Eugene Corporon. I can tell you
that it is pretty unbelievable! I play principal in this group and would be
happy to show you around and introduce you to Drs. Scott and Gillespie.

Just let me know if you have any other questions. I will be happy to answer
them or to help you get in touch with Dr. Scott yourself.

Good luck!

Cheryl Cifelli
