I first became aware of Mazzeo when I was an undergrad (dates deleted to
protect the aging!!), and my teacher gave me issues of the Selmer
"Bandwagon" to read for the Mazzeo articles. My whole approach to scale
practice stems from a pamphlet written by Mazzeo and published by Selmer.
It is included in the book "The Clarinet: Excellence and Artistry", which
includes most if not all of those old "Bandwagon" articles. It is a
wonderful book. Mazzeo's article in "The Clarinet" about the Stravinsky
"Three Pieces" is the one I give my students when they study the
Stravinsky. "Mazzeo's Musings" was a treasure in any issue of "The
Clarinet" in which it appeared. I never actually met him, but I'll all
miss him.
