One of my teachers had me think of "tssst" for help with staccato. "ah" is
one of the most open sounds. I found that when I thought of "sss" to focus
the air, my throat didn't seem to be very open, and when thinking "ah" the
air wasn't very focused. Some teachers say to think of "ee" for the
clarinet, and "oo" for the saxophone.

Still not satisfied with the way I sound, I thought I would try something
different, to try to find a word or syllable to think of to have both the air
very focused and my throat very open. So far, "arse" seems to work for me,
although its tricky to think of saying the "ar" and the "se" at the same
time. And how could you pronounce a "b" with a clarinet in your mouth?

This thread has gone on much longer than I had intended. I thought I would
just share my chuckle with the group. :)

Take care,

Susan
