Sarah,

I think Ken Caputo has an excellent point about the usefulness of the
eefer in college. If you can play it well, you'll get more playing time
and more respect. But if you practiced it for 4 years and only played it
in band for 2, I would tend to think that you already have the discipline
to continue Eb study individually. (Hopefully with the aid of a private
teacher, though!) For myself, I know that my playing has always improved
the most during those times when I had the pressure of being principal
chair. Those are experiences I wouldn't trade for the world. So I would
say continue to study Eb, but take the first-chair position. You might
even be able to help your own Eb playing by helping a younger student
learn the eefer. After all, one way or another, your band is going to
need a new Eb player at the end of next year!
