I can add my partial substantiation that these megaphone-like clarinet mutes
were indeed available commercially. Some long time ago while researching
through old American music periodicals (I think I was looking for the origins
of "Listen to the Mockingbird" in graduate school!) I ran across an ad for
this mute, complete with illustration. In fact it looked exactly like a megaphjone, with holes for the arms and mouthpiece. It struck me as silly then, and
thinking about it makes me laugh now, too! How I would love to see and play
with one now! What a hoot! MG
