Yes, a lot of it is personal. Some of it depends on your embouchure.
Also some reeds do seem to go better on certain mouthpieces. When you
get up to the intermediate level, you should be able to find what suits
you best. As a beginner, just be sure to use a good quality reed.
Cheap reeds sound bad and even taste bad. Both of these are
discouraging.
