Chad--

Let's start with your questioning about the lettering. Yes, a repairman
can "re-ink" the lettering. What is often used is a stick of gold
colored leaf--similar to a grease pencil, but more permanent.
Unfortunately, I do not know of repairmen in your area.

Your concerns about the pain in your hands and wrists are very real, and
can be very serious. First, neck straps are available. Check with your
local music store, or try the Brasswind/Woodwind in South Bend, Indiana
(sorry--I'm at work and do not have the number, but it is an 800 line).

Second, MODERATE your practice sessions. Based on your statements about
the condition, and my own personal experience with a similar condition
due to extensive computer work, I suggest limiting your practice session
to an absolute maximum of 1 1/2 to 2 hours at a time. That will give
your hand/wrists time between sessions to recover. If your hands/wrists
become painful during a practice session, take a break. Also you might
check with your physician about exercises to keep your hands/wrists
loose and flexible.

I can tell you from personal experience that any repetitive strain
injury can cause long-term problems. I have an injury that became
serious enough to force me to reduce my workload on the computer (my
main tool at work), and stay off the clarinet for a period of two
months. Because I was not able to practice, my recital-approval jury
was delayed from March to June, and my graduate recital had to be
cancelled with no new date officially set.

The bottom line: Take care of yourself and those hands/wrists.
