Chad--

I don't play on the Recital series instruments, but I'll attempt to
answer your question. The issue is not "fat" or "thin." The issue is
the length. Shorter barrels are used when the pitch is flat and longer
barrels are used when the pitch is sharp. The purpose--long or
short--is to avoid pulling the barrel out too far if sharp, or to make
it easier to lower the pitch when flat by pushing in. Because the
lengths of the long and short barrels are usually only a few millimeters
difference, it allows for very fine tuning.

Your shorter barrel appears to be fat, because the Selmer Recital series
instruments are very thick-walled and dense. The shorter the barrel,
the fatter its appearance.

Hope this helps.
