I agree with Mel. I think that your fingers should be as close to the
instrument as possible for maximum speed. That way, it is more
effcient, and also your fingers knows right where is go. If you miss a
key slightly you may squeak.

I would work a lot of intervals, esp. 5ths, 6ths, 7ths, 8ths, etc. to
really get those fingers movings. Also, other fingers exercises such as
rotating the pinkys among the keys they cover (ex. low E, F, G#, F#).
