Naomi--

You might like Malcolm Arnold's clarinet works -- a Sonatina and Two
Concerti (I think there are two). It's bright and effective music (though
not especially profound or moving) and I always associate it with band. I
like the Sonatina the best. Since you like Hindemith and Bernstein, take a
look at their Sonatas. Or listen to them -- Jonathan Cohler has a terrific
recording of the Hindemith. (Hindemith also wrote a Concerto which is much
less attractive, at least to my taste.) I'm not aware of anything by Holst
you might play, though his band music is to die for.

BTW, you don't happen to know Anna Gassman-Pines at Yale, do you? She is
probably in your class and is a good friend from Madison.

Good luck!

Subject: recommended audition pieces?

Hi everyone. I just joined this list and it seems like the place to ask
for some advice in finding a good audition piece when I try out for my
university's concert band in the fall. I know "good" is a highly
subjective term, so I'll try to add some details to clarify things. The
past two years in this same audition, I used a piece by Weber whose exact
name I forget (I lost that music), and Mozart's Concerto in A major.
Neither of these particularly suited my taste and this was unfortunately
reflected in my playing. I made it both years, but just barely. I always
play music I enjoy better than that which I don't; seems reasonable. But
with my extremely limited knowledge of clarinet music, the trick is to find
a piece I like and can play well. In band, I have enjoyed playing the
third part in Bernstein's "Slava!" and "Overture to Candide," Holst's "2nd
Suite in F for Military band" and various Hindemith pieces just to name a
few. I find these pieces much more interesting than typical orchestral
pieces and as a result, I play them better. Does anyone have any
suggestions for a more concert band-ish piece I could try? Is there
anything else you need to know before making any recommendations?

Thanks for your help.

-Naomi
