Subj: recommended audition pieces?
Date: Wed, 9 Jul 1997 00:21:59 -0400

Hi everyone. I just joined this list and it seems like the place to ask
for some advice in finding a good audition piece when I try out for my
university's concert band in the fall. I know "good" is a highly
subjective term, so I'll try to add some details to clarify things. The
past two years in this same audition, I used a piece by Weber whose exact
name I forget (I lost that music), and Mozart's Concerto in A major.
Neither of these particularly suited my taste and this was unfortunately
reflected in my playing. I made it both years, but just barely. I always
play music I enjoy better than that which I don't; seems reasonable. But
with my extremely limited knowledge of clarinet music, the trick is to find
a piece I like and can play well. In band, I have enjoyed playing the
third part in Bernstein's "Slava!" and "Overture to Candide," Holst's "2nd
Suite in F for Military band" and various Hindemith pieces just to name a
few. I find these pieces much more interesting than typical orchestral
pieces and as a result, I play them better. Does anyone have any
suggestions for a more concert band-ish piece I could try? Is there
anything else you need to know before making any recommendations?

Thanks for your help.

-Naomi
