In my opinion, this suggests that you don't know them well enough. They
need to be automatic. Starting note, ending note, key, boom! As your
teacher said (more or less) you shouldn't have think about them.

I am speaking as an amateur who can only do this in the easier keys. The
pros who have paid their dues (practice-practice-practice) can do it in all
keys major and minor. My copy of Baermann's third division isn't worn out
yet but I am working on it.
