I think it really depends on the instrument, though. I've played E-13's
that are just barely better than your typical E-11 or Yamaha, but I've
also played my own E-13, which I've kept as my primary Bb instrument
because, quite frankly, it's superior to all the R-13's I've tried. I
know that somewhere there have got to be some good R-13's that are better
than my E-13, but until I find them, I'm sticking with the
supposedly-intermediate clarinet. It's not anything against R-13's,
either, because I love my new R-13 A clarinet. I must conclude, then,
that just as no two trees are the same before they're chopped down, no
two wooden clarinets are ever quite the same, and if you're lucky you can
find a really good one.
