Subj: clarinet playing, once again/flaming

Holidaze find me long-winded, but after perusing my other favorite
list-serv, dog-related, and walking my faithful canine, (no, not a
basset), other thoughts keep rattling around in my brain so I'll spew
forth again.
I really enjoy dog training. I have read many, many, many books,
articles, etc. Years ago I determined that there is no ONE book,
trainer, method, that works in every situation, for every dog, for every
student. I own around 50 or more dog
training/personality/temperament/management/etc. books, check them out
of the library, buy/trade new ones, read at least 2 magazines monthly
re:dogs, scour the internet, you get the idea. For every author and
their method, there is a devout devotee who espouses this as THE way to
train and relate to dogs. I can find something I don't agree with in
every one, or that won't work for me at this time with this dog, but I
can also find MUCH of value from each one. A great deal of thought goes
into my handling of my dogs, and I have made mistakes that I hope I can
learn from. When I am frustrated with a clarinet student, I can often
think of the canine mind and how maddening it can be to try to reach a
creature that considers English a foreign language, and people an alien
race. But most important, that there is NO ONE WAY! And if one doesn't
work try another, but think it through. My many books by many authors do
not confuse me, and do not allow the relatively few teachers you have
had to confuse you: pick out what you can use from them, and learn from
what you cannot.
Sorry to be mixing teaching/learning, and canine/human, but that is what
diversity of experience and opinions allow for, and those of you
considering exiting this list must understand that you cannot always
walk out on every seemingly unpleasant situation throughout your life.
Sometimes you must have the courage of your convictions, defend your
views, ask your questions, accept/don't accept and learn from the
answers. You can miss very much of what you are looking for if you
leave because of what you consider rudeness of a very few. I think every
list has elements of "flaming" going on, and some writers are more thin
skinned than others. The variety of people on the lists come from all
over the world, and what is rude and inciteful to some is really an
exciting, meaningful discussion to others. I read these lists in order
to get food for thought and to learn what I do not know and to get
ideas; the lists are entertaining as well as educational, and it is
thrilling to be involved in a public forum the likes of which the world
has never seen. Don't be hasty---you will miss out!!

Sorry so lengthy!-----Julie
