Clare and others,

A safe way to sand the cork evenly is to take a piece of fine sandpaper and
cut it so you have a strip the width of the cork. Wrap the strip ALL of
the way around the circumference of the cork (so all of the cork is in
contact with the sandpaper at the same time). Slowly and carefully turn
the sandpaper on the cork, keeping it wrapped around the entire cork the
whole time. Frequently check for a good fit.
